Monthly Challenge: March 2019

26 February 2019

I took a photography class as part of my degree program at university. That was a few years ago, and I have not been using anything that I learned from that class. I wish I could say that it is because I’ve had no access to a good DSLR camera, but my roommate is a photographer with a decent camera. No, I haven’t been using the (really limited) education I received in photography because quite honestly, at the time, I had other paths I was following, and a photography class was just a means to an end. But in time, I have come across situations where I have found myself wishing I could recall the little bits and pieces of teachings I know could have been of value from that class. There have been several projects and goals I have taken interest in, where having a bit of photo taking or editing knowledge could have gone a long way, but I’ve been caught scrounging for what little fragments of information I could pull out of the back of my memory and the internet.

Then I became determined to start this blog. Writing was my primary objective, but a blog with no pictures is quite sterile, and let’s face it, kinda sad. I’ve been doing what I can with what I’ve got, my camera phone and a free photo editing app for Instagram posts, but I’ve already found myself bumping into the wall of what limited understanding I have. I need to level up and put some points into photography.

So, for the month of March, my goal is to advance my skills in the taking and editing of pictures (or photographs). I will be subscribing to Skillshare in order to learn these new skills. What is Skillshare? So glad you asked. Skillshare is an online learning platform with thousands of classes in almost anything your heart could desire. There are no long term obligations, or year-long contracts. Just sign up for month to month payments, and cancel at any time. (This is not a sponsored post, I just wanted to give the pitch that I’ve heard so many times before.)

My goal is to cover the following topics through March:

  • Composition and layout

  • Working with natural light and shadow

  • Working with additional lights

  • Understanding the basics of working with a DSLR camera, settings and functions

  • Basic editing - curves, balance, levels, etc.

I am counting on my desire to have prettier pictures for my blog, and the power of Skillshare’s many photography classes to power me through this next month.

So what are your plans for March? Have anything you want to learn that Skillshare might be able to help out with? I would love to know what you would utilize Skillshare to learn if you took the opportunity. Let me know in the comments below. You can reply to this message.
